Went to Gaston to celebrate my partner's birthday and we would like to take the advantage of 50% cashback (GFC group). The restaurant's interior was inspired by Parisian café. It was dimly lit, romantic and warm. Ordered their USDA Prime Flat Iron with steak frites and Duck Leg Confit. For appetizer, they served complimentary caesar salad. It was creamy but the acidity from the lemon and the funkiness from the anvhovies complement the creaminess well. We requested the steak to be medium. The steak temperature was on point and it was perfectly seasoned. We also asked for three kind of sauces: beef jus, bernaise and brandy. Our favourite was the beef jus, it was salty, savoury and creamy, compliments the steak well. The brandy sauce got a little bit of alcohol taste, a bit sweet and sour but not overly sweet. While the bernaise sauce was so creamy and buttery it tasted cheesy. The frites was salty and crispy, unfortunately there were some parts that were burnt and bitter. The duck confit was tender but crispy on the outside. The duck didn't have weird smell and livery taste, it was perfect. The condiments were unique: celeriac pureé, grilled grapes and pommes anna. I don't like celeriac because I don't like the taste of celery, but when I ate it with the grilled grapes I was stunned. The combination works well and masked the celery taste. The layers of the pommes anna was crispy but still soft in the middle. It was perfectly seasoned too. I actually enjoyed the duck confit more than the steak and frites. In the end we were too full of the unlimited frites and fries we couldn't order the dessert. Would like to come back to Gaston to try their poached pear.
